    Vernon R. Downen, 79, of Kirkland, Ill., died Monday, June 22, 2009, at home.
    He was born July 29, 1929, in Christopher, the son of Walter R. and Elsie E. (Toney) Downen. He married Norma N. Bacon on July 3, 1948, in Mulkeytown.
    Vernon worked as an operating engineer for Illinois Hydraulic Construction Company and Grafton Township. He was a member of First Congregational Church in Huntley. He was a fan of his son's motocross racing and collected hats of his favorite sport teams, the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.
    He is survived by his wife, Norma Downen of Kirkland; four children, Diane (Ron) Smrz of Johnsburg, Gary (Joanne) Downen of Herrin, Ron (Mary Jo) Downen of Kirkland and Sheri Neff of Fox River Grove; seven grandchildren, Jenny, Jeremy, Jessica, Byron, Josephine, Stephanie and Daniel; and seven great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents.
    Following his wishes, there will be no services. A memorial fund has been established for OSF Hospice.
