    MUNK , Edward F. (Age 84)

Of Glenville, NY died on July 25, 2009 at Ellis Hospital after a long illness. He was born on June 23, 1925, to Rudolph and Dorothea (Bliesner) Munk on their farm near the small rural community of Plaza in eastern Washington State, the third child in a family of ten children. Following high school Uncle Sam soon sent "Greetings" and Ed joined the Army Air Force in September, 1943. He was a member of the 8th Air Force 24th Squadron at the rank of Staff Sergeant. His plane flew 23 missions, mostly bombing runs over Germany. The last, and to Ed, the best, was a food drop over Holland where the people were starving. He always remembered seeing the people on the ground, waving to the planes and running for the food boxes as they were dropped. Following the war Ed entered Washington State College (now University) and majored in Mechanical Engineering and graduated with a BS degree in 1950. While at school Ed met his future wife Phyllis Harvey when they both belonged to the campus square dance club. Ed was recruited by G.E. as a Test Engineer and was assigned positions in Massachusetts, Vermont and settling in Schenectady in 1951. Ed and Phyliss have three children: Cynthia Jane Galkiewicz, Gregory Edward and Dwayne David Munk . Greg's two chidren are Jennifer Elizabeth Barbosa and Gerard Thompson; Ed's great granddaughter is Daiana Cecelia Barbosa. Ed enjoyed living close to the Adirondacks and did alot of fishing and family camping there. The family enjoyed traveling and they drove across the country several times to visit relatives in Wisconsin, California and Washington State. Ed and Phyliss flew to the west coast after the children left home, took cruises to Alaska and Bermuda and drove the motorhome from Nova Scotia to San Francisco, visiting many states in between. Ed was active in Schenectady Boys Scouts Troop # 59 and a scoutmaster for seven years. He enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, bowling, gardening and growing roses. He and his friends formed a poker club and met regularly for many years. In recent years he resided at Ingersoll Place Assisted Living when he could not safely live at home. He then moved to Kingsway Arms Nursing Centre where he received wonderful care. He went to Ellis Hospital where he died peacefully after a short stay. His family will always be grateful to the caregivers at Kingsway and Ellis, the doctors who cared for him and for their kind and compassionate care that made his final days and weeks as comfortable as possible for both him and his family. A Memorial will be held Saturday August 1, 2009 at 1 PM at the Glenville Funeral home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Glenville with Pastor Shaun Dugan officiating. Ed was a member of the Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Schenectady. A calling hour will precede the memorial at the funeral home from 12 - 1 PM. He will receive military honors at Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery, Schuylerville (notice to follow). The family will hold a luncheon following the memorial on Saturday at The Waters Edge Lighthouse Restaurant and Inn, 2 Freeman's Bridge Rd. Glenville. It has been suggested that memorial gifts might be made in Ed's name to Zion Lutheran Church, 153 Nott St. Schenectady, NY 12308 or to any Boy's Scout Group; or the Alzheimer's Association.
