    · Section: Obituaries
Duane "Toad" Dickinson passed away at his Port Angeles home on February 4, 2013, from cancer. He was 87 years old. He was born August 5, 1925, to Bert Clifford and Dorothy Arlene (Lincoln) Dickinson in Shelton, Washington. He attended high school in Shelton before joining the Navy in 1942. He served aboard the USS New Mexico (BB-40) for four years before his honorable discharge in 1946. Toad married Ruth Kirk in Spokane, Washington, in 1960. He worked as a logger from Oregon to Alaska and then as a commercial fisherman before his entrepreneurial nature saw him as owner of Port Angeles Logging Supply and, later, Dale Rolff Restaurant — now Cornerhouse — from 1971 to 1990. After retiring, he and Ruth started to travel, never missing the New Mexico ship reunions, as well as to Australia several times, Canada and across the U.S. They summered at the Log Cabin Resort on Lake Crescent. He loved fishing at Lake Crescent until they started the catch-and-release program. He also loved watching sports on television, particularly baseball. Toad also had a particular fondness for blackberry pie, concord grape pie and apple rhubarb jam. He was a member both of the Downtown Association and the USS New Mexico Association. Toad is survived by his sons, Bert (Corrina) of Port Angeles, Kirk of Issaquah, Washington, and Lloyd of California; daughter Jane of Port Orchard, Washington; brother Bob (Roberta) of Port Angeles; sisters Charolotte Dunscomb and Audre Bower, both of Port Angeles; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; parents Bert and Dorothy; brothers Burton, Donald and John; sister "Babe" Verna; and his infant son and daughter. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice.
