    WESTPHALIA 1868 / ATLANTICA 1887 / PROVINCIA DI SAO PAULO 1888 / MENTANA 1889 / SUD AMERICA 1891
The WESTPHALIA was built in 1868 by Caird & Co., Greenock for Hamburg America Line. She was a 3,158 gross ton ship, length 339.9ft x beam 40ft, one funnel, two masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 12 knots. There was accommodation for 90-1st, 130-2nd and 520-3rd class passengers. Launched on 24th Jun.1868, she sailed from Hamburg on her maiden voyage to Southampton and New York on 16th Sep.1868. She commenced her last voyage from Hamburg to Havre and New York on 28th Apr.1875 before being laid up. In 1878 she was rebuilt with two funnels and compound engines, and on 30th Jul.1879 she resumed the Hamburg - Havre - New York service. She started her last voyage to New York on 19th Dec.1886 and in 1887 was sold to the British company, H.F.Swan of Newcastle who re-engined her and renamed her ATLANTICA. In 1888 she went to Gazzo & Schiafino of Italy and was renamed PROVINCIA DI SAO PAULO. In 1889 she was resold to La Veloce of Italy and was renamed MENTANA and was further renamed SUD AMERICA later in 1891. She was finally scrapped in Genoa in 1901. [I no longer believe this to be the father of Franz and Josef Zajicek. I now believe that I mistakenly showed his father as being on the same immigration ship as Wenzel. I now know that Wenzel arrived on August 16, 1881 on the Westphalia, and Josef arrived on March 11, 1881 on the Donau. They may still be related, but I still need to prove it.] This seems to be confirmed by the information listed in Vaclav's Obituary from 1896. Notes on Frantisek Zajicek (5-17-1828) (Referred to as "Wood Carver") - written by Randall BLECHA (from his website)
In assigning this particular individual as the correct Frantisek Zajicek, I have had to accept certain data as confirming this person. However, there is considerable information that is in conflict, or does not support this conclusion. At the present time, I believe that the supporting information is adequate enough to enter him and his descendents. Below is an analysis of the supporting and conflicting information:

    Supporting:

    1. Immigration data from July 1883 supports the birth information that was provided by Jan Zajicek who researched the original birth records in the archives in Pilzen, Czech Republic.
    Individual Ship Manifest
    Frantisek Z 55 thus 1828 1828 Per Jan Z
Marie Z 50 thus 1833 Per 1900 census, she is 5 yrs younger than Fr.

    2. DNA: DNA evidence from a direct descendent of Wood Carver is a 96% match with a descendent of Vaclav Zajicek (1813)

    3. In the 1910 census, Frank Tellin Jr. is living with Frantisek (Wood Carver) and his son Frank Sr. in Chicago. Frank Tellin is the child of Barbora Zajicek Tellin (sister to Frantisek Wood Carver). This brings these families together.

    4. The 1900 census shows that Marie, in response to ?how many children have you given birth to, and how many are still alive?? she responds ?6?. This is consistent with all that we know about this family. We have the names of 6 children. The oldest would be Anna (later marries Anthony Kupka) (Also another connection to the Frank 1808 and Anna Zajicek living in Washington County, Iowa) whose birth year is 1856. This is in the year following the marriage of Frantisek (Woodcarver) and Marie Ernetovou in 1855. I believe this also corroborates that Marie, who is still living with Frank in Chicago in the 1900 census is the one and only wife to Frantisek.

    5. At first, I thought this was a conflicting piece of information, but I now believe it is supporting. Joseph Zajicek (1861), son of Frantisek Woodcarver, has his birth location as Kralovice instead of Bujesily. However, Kralovice is only 15.2 km from Bujesily. It appears to be a larger town. So, he may have actually been born there, or he listed it because the Kralovice has better name recognition. Or, when his father sells their home in Bujesily in 1864, we don't know where the family lived until 1869 when Frantisek (1808) and many family members moved to the U.S. They may very likely have lived in Kralovice during that time.

    Conflicts:

    1. Many documents list the maiden name for Marie, wife of Frank Zajicek (Woodcarver) as Novakova. Jan Zajicek documents that the correct maiden name is Ernetovou. I believe the error arose because Frantisek?s mother?s maiden name was Novakova, but it is still an inconsistency.

    2. The birth dates for Frank and Marie on the 1900 census and 1910 census (and subsequently their headstones) do not agree with those provided by Jan Zajicek. In addition, the date of marriage that is extrapolated from the 1900 (32 years) would be 1868. This is very confusing. If they had only been married for 32 years, that would place their marriage date well after the birth years of several of their children. However, I believe I have established that Marie was, indeed, the mother of six children.

    3. Frantisek Zajicek appears to have made his living as a carpenter and woodcarver in the U.S. In Bohemia, the only records for Frantisek that can be found by Jan Zajicek indicate that he worked as a steward or manager on an agricultural farm. This may or may not be an actual discrepancy.

    Notes:

This is a very tenuous connection - I am not completely convinced that the John ZAJICEK living in Chicago was our Jan Nepomak ZAJICEK, but this is how I made the connection.
I found a birth certificate for a baby girl born on 11 Jun 1877 (no first name given) to a John ZAJICEK and Franteska KOTVA. In the 1880 Census I found a John and Franseska SEIZAK living with their 3 year old daughter Mary. I believe SIEZAK is actually ZAJICEK.
In 1898 there was a death certificate for Franteska ZAJICEK. In 1900 I found a Mary BABKA (married name) living with her husband Frank, and her father John ZAJICEK. It says she was born in Jun 1877. Also John was an undertaker like his brother Vaclav, and I have seen his name on many family member's death certificates.

Jan married Frantiska KOTROVOU on 07 Nov 1870. Frantiska (daughter of Joseph KOTVA) was born about 1850 in Vejvanov, Czech Republic; died on 20 Jan 1898 in Chicago, Cook County, IL; was buried on 23 Jan 1898 in Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, IL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

This is perplexing: I do not think that this is our Antonia because it shows her with an 82 year-old lady who is listed as her mother, but the Mother (Mary) is shown as having had 4 children with only 2 living. That is inconsistent with what we know about Anny. Also this family immigrated in 1870.

Is this her? There is a Micholis Lapina mentioned in Barbora Lang Zajicek's obituary in 1922. Micholis is the same as Nicholas. Same year of immigration and birth year is about right, but no mention earlier of this family.

In 2009, Gertrude Blecha thought that Adele's husband had left her early in their marriage and never returned. I'm now thinking that this may have been her second husband. I believe her first husband, Nedjl died in the 1920's. In the 1957 obituary for Camille Copeland, her sister, she's going by the name Nedjl again, but we can see from the 1930 census that she had remarried to Samuel Bukurov. I suspect that Bukurov may have left.

1942: See Name Change Document: It appears that in 1942, Blanche officially changed her name to "Blanche". On her birth certificate, she was listed as Paulina. However, it appears that she claimed that her name was always "Blanche". Her Certificate of Baptism from December 5, 1903 does list her as "Blanche Clotilde Zajicek." She felt like she was just correcting the birth certificate. This tale was also related to Randy Blecha by Gertrude McDaniel Blecha.

She lists herself as Catholic on the Vital and Personal & Statistics Form.
