Former Washington resident Dan Gordon Lothrop passed away at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Dan was born on January 1, 1932, in Brockton, Massachusetts, to Melissa and Burton Lothrop . At an early age, living in the countryside, he had a wonderful horse he never forgot. To see him later, he appeared to have been born in the saddle. Mr.Lothrop served five years in the U.S. Air Force but spent the next 20 years serving in the U.S. Coast Guard as a flight engineer and aviation machinist. He traveled for his work, including to the East Coast, Puget Sound, south San Francisco, Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Portugal and the South Pacific, including Oahu, Hawaii. He was highly commended for saving over 20 lives. In 1958, he met Leora Shirley "Joyce" Wasankari, and they fell in love and were happily married for the next 55 years. They enjoyed living along the coast and inland California, and finally settled in Port Angeles, sometimes wintering in the Moabi Desert. Dan seemed skilled at everything, as he built a home on Wasankari Road on Salt Creek. After retiring from the Coast Guard, Dan owned and operated his own business, Lothrop Trucking, for five years. Dan was a lover of the ocean and boats, and avidly fished and crabbed for sport and food. He was an enthusiastic cook, played the guitar and harmonica, and loved to read. He was a kind and benevolent animal lover, and he, along with his wife, Joy, rescued cats and dogs through the years. Country music and Dan were synonymous, and he once sent one of his original songs to Johnny Cash. He is survived affectionately by his stepdaughter, Ginny Kelly of Fairfax, California.
