    Longtime Manette business owner Vernon Eugene Powers , 84, of Bremerton died Saturday of Parkinson's disease at Belmont Terrace Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bremerton.

    Born Jan. 30, 1921, in Osborne County, Kan., to Eugene W. and Ruby (Harvey) Greig, he was adopted at the age of 4 by Harry and Catharine Powers . In 1941, he married Gladys Louise Davidson in Erie, Kan.

    During World War II, Mr. Powers joined the U.S. Navy Ship Repair Unit in instrument repair in 1944 and served until 1946, continuing his service with the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1950. He established Powers Jewelry in the Manette area of Bremerton in 1946 and operated the business until health forced him to retire in 1995.

    His business in Manette was his work and his hobby. He enjoyed repairing and selling watches and jewelry each day and meeting his customers who often became his friends. He was well-respected in the community for his "skills, generosity and honesty."

    Mr. Powers was a member of the Manette Community Church, the Bremerton Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 68, Bremerton Elks 1181 and the Manette Historical Society.

    Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Beth Brown and her husband, Timothy, of Walla Walla and Verna Hazen and her husband, Logan, of Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Rebecca Hazen and Emily and Daniel Brown; two brothers, W.H. Powers of Bradenton, Fla., and Raymond M. Powers of Wichita, Kan.; and a sister, Anne Doran of Kansas City, Mo.

    A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 at Manette Community Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Manette Community Church, 1137 Hayward Ave., Bremerton, WA 98310 or to the Kiwanis Bennett Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 164, Bremerton, WA 98337.
