Notes - KULL, CHARLES JOSEPH March 22, 1917 to Sept. 4, 2004 "Charlie" passed away due to complications from a stroke. Born in Monroe, Michigan to Guy and Elise Kull, (one of 2 sons), Charlie attended the University of Notre Dame and Michigan State University majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Thereafter, he worked for a while at the Monroe Auto Equipment Co., (Monroe Shocks), as a tool and die draftsman. In October of 1940, he moved to San Diego and went to work in the Engineering Dept. of Consolidated Aircraft Corp. In 1942, he was one of two Consolidated employees selected by Lockheed Overseas Corp. (who, under license, built Consolidated B-24s), to go to Northern Ireland where from mid 1942 to mid 1943 he worked making modifications to the Lockheed built 24s, to suit various combat conditions that flight crews were experiencing at the time. Back at Consolidated in San Diego in 1943, he taught B-24 ground school to military personnel. In 1946 he married Bette Lou Edmondson, whom he met when she was also working at Consolidated in the B-24 assembly line dept. From 1946 to mid 1947, due to the ups and downs of the aircraft industry, he opened a model shop in Escondido specializing in powered scale model airplanes. During this time he designed and built a trophy winning powered model race plane that reached 93 m.p.h. under U-control. From mid 1947 to mid 1956, back at the now Convair Vultee Aircraft Corp., he spent part of this time at Muroc, (Edwards AFB), working on a flight test program for the XF-92A, the predecessor to the F-102 and F-106. From 1956 thru 1963, at the now General Dynamics/Convair Corp. and sequentially General Dynamics Astronautics, he worked on F-102/ TF-102, Atlas Centaur and F-111 engineering programs. During this time, he also instructed Air Force personnel in various aspects of the Atlas rocket as well as supervised 56 instructors and graduated over 1,900 Officers and Technicians. After that, he went to work, for Ryan Aeronautical on their Drone programs. In 1982 Charlie retired, he and Bette then bought a motorhome, camped out on a regular basis with their wise-cracking good friends and traveled the U.S. extensively, enjoying fishing and seeing unique, out of the way places. Charlie was also a California licensed Mechanical Engineer and held a patent for inventing a tool to remove tubeless tires from automobile wheels. Charlie was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years and is survived by three sons, Chip, Chuck and Jeff, two granddaughters and one great-grandaughter. We love you Dad.
