- Gene Martens, 78, of Yakima, Washington, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2013 at Apple Creek Adult Family Homes.
Gene was born July 2, 1935, in Manning, Iowa, to Alvin and Clara Martens. He graduated from Manning High School in 1953 and from Iowa State University in 1957. He lived and worked in Snohomish, Washington; Manning, Iowa; and Yakima, Washington.
Gene was a man of faith and will be remembered for his gentle spirit, servant's heart, kindness, humility and integrity. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Snohomish, Manning, and Yakima.
He leaves behind Laura Martens, his wife of 51 years; three daughters and sons-in-laws: Leslie and Peter Wampler, Grand Haven, Michigan; Bonnie and Dan Nelson, Zagreb, Croatia; Monica and Todd Holdridge, Shoreline, Washington; six grandchildren: Hannah and Katie Wampler, Lydia and Ellie Beth Nelson, Jonathan and Chad Holdridge, one nephew and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marcia Pierson.
The family would like to thank Apple Creek Adult Family Homes for the excellent care they have given him over the past three and a half years, as well as Memorial Hospice for their compassion during his last few days.
A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 6015 Summitview Ave. Yakima. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Trailseekers, Northwest Parkinson's Foundation or INC Ministries/GHI (Bonnie and Dan Nelson's Youth Ministry in Croatia) through Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
