Mrs. Zak, age 100, died peacefully on July 8, 2012 in Alexandria, VA, where she lived with her daughter. She is the widow of Robert A. Zak who died in 1988. Cassy Zak was born on April 20, 1912 in Chicago IL.
She graduated from Mother Cabrini's Nursing School in Chicago, IL and was a Registered Nurse at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. On September 19, 1937 she married Robert A. Zak. They had two children, Robert "Bob" T. Zak, a retired Captain of Enforcement with The Washington Department of Fish and Wild Life and a retired SGT Major, Army, CID, residing with his wife, Mari in Vancouver, WA and Marilyn "Mimi" Zak, a retired Foreigh Service Officer with the U.S. Agency for International Development of Alexandria, WA. Cassy has two grandchildren, Robert Corey Zak of St. Martinville, LA, and Michael Zak of Seattle, WA; and two great-grandchildren, David and Courtney Zak.
Mrs. Zak and her family moved to Everett in 1947 where she worked at Providence Hospital for more than 30 years. Cassy helped to establish to Providence Hospital Nurses Association, was active in civil defense and St. John's Women's Guild. In 1994 she moved to live with her son and his wife in Camas, WA and was active in St. Thomas Church Guild. In 1997, Cassy joined her daughter in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic and transferred with her in 1998 to Managua Nicaragua. She was a lively participant in diplomatic life and helped the victims of Hurricane Mitch. She returned to the U.S. with her daughter in 2002 to live in Alexandria, VA.
A Viewing will be held at the Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home on Thursday, July 12, 2012 from 2 to 5 p.m.
The Funeral Mass will be at St. John Catholic Church in Mukilteo on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 11 a.m.
A reception will be held immediately afterwards at the Church with the internment at Cypress Lawn Cemetery.
