Lawrence Dye was born about 1807 in Mason or Fleming Co., Kentucky. He is living with his parents on the 1810 & 1820 censuses of Fleming Co., KY. His father died in 1822 when he was about age 15, and his mother died in 1825 when he was about age 18. Lawrence married Mary Ann VanTrease on Jan. 20, 1825 in Fleming Co., KY, and they had 9 children. The family is listed on the 1830 census of Fleming Co., KY. Lawrence fell into debt about 1837 and went to South Carolina & Georgia between 1837-1841 to earn some money. On the 1840 census, Mary Ann is listed as the head of household with the children. While Lawrence was gone the court awarded his property to his debtors, and he emigrated with his family in 1841 to Vermilion Co., IL. The family is listed on the 1850 census of District 21, Vermilion Co., IL, and on the 1860 census of Elwood Twp., Vermilion Co., IL. In July of 1862, Lawrence enlisted on the Union side in the Civil War - he was about age 56. The tours of duty were hard on him, and he became ill and never fully recovered. Mary Ann VanTrease Dye died in 1865. Lawrence is listed on the 1870 census of Elwood Twp., age 63 and living alone. Lawrence remarried Delilah Mills Ritter Creitzer March 17, 1871 in Vermilion Co., IL. It was the second marriage for Lawrence, and the third marriage for Delilah. Delilah was the daughter of Levi Mills & Mary "Polly" O'Bryant. Delilah had at least 5 children from her marriage to John Ritter, and Lawrence & Delilah had 4 more children. Lawrence died Sept 7, 1879 in Vermilion Co., IL. When I wrote the state of Illinois for his death certificate I was told they did not have one - the doctor who treated him stated in an affadavit in his pension file that he treated Lawrence for free due to his extreme poverty so he did not keep any records of his death. Delilah married twice more after Lawrence's death, and she died sometime before June 4, 1892 and probably before 1891.
