- Jerome (Jerry) Robert Zajicek completed his earthly journey on September 8, 2008 in Ft. Collins, Colorado at his home 6112 Brookwater Lane.Jerry was born on June 21, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Cicero and Berwyn, suburbs of Chicago. During his youth, Jerry enjoyed dabbling in taxidermy, tap and polka dancing and horsemanship. He graduated from J. Sterling Morton High School in 1939 in Cicero, Ill. He enlisted in 1942 and served in the Army Air Corps of the United States Army until 1946. After training, he served in the Air Transport Command, ferrying planes to North Africa, as a technical trainer/inspector and later as Wing Navigator for the 356th Bombardment Squadron, 331st Bombardment Group (Heavy), North West Field, Guam, where he attained the rank of Major.Jerry married Iva Foreman on September 10, 1944 in Grand Island, NE. They lived in various locations in the States during Jerry's military career. After the service, Jerry, a city boy, took up a rural endeavor of raising chickens and turkeys in Nebraska. He also enjoyed building three of the homes in which his growing family lived. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of Nebraska in 1959 and a Master's Degree in Education and School Administration in 1960. His career as a teacher and a school administrator lasted from 1959 through 1987. During these years, the family lived in Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio and overseas. In 1964, the family moved to Kano, Nigeria. During the next four years, Jerry worked with the Ohio University U.S.A.I.D. project at Kano Teacher's College. From 1968 to 1981, he worked in a government Title Three Education Project and was principal at an elementary school and middle school in Ohio. Between 1981 and 1987, he returned to Africa where he lived in Botswana and Swaziland. He taught English writing for a time for the Ministry of Education in Gaborone, Botswana and for South Dakota University's U.S.A.I.D. project in Botswana. When he moved to Swaziland he also taught English for the Ministry of Education.He entered full-time retirement in 1987. Throughout his adult life he enjoyed good company, traveling, painting, African arts and crafts, gardening, and baseball, especially the Cubs and college football, the Nebraska Huskers.Jerry was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Windsor, CO, the American Legion, and Elks Lodge #804.Jerry is survived by his wife, Iva; sister Virginia (Robert) Visin of Crystal Lake, Ill, Patricia (George, deceased) Andel of Rolling Meadows, Ill; sister-in-law Marilynn (Thomas) Zajicek of Henderson, NV; son James (Faye Byrd) Zajicek of Rio Vista, CA; daughter Ashley (John) Schmidt of Loveland, CO; and grandson Drew (Sonja) Zajicek of Alameda, CA. Jerry is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers James Louis and Thomas Edward.A Celebration of Life will be held at First United Methodist Church, 503 Walnut St in Windsor, CO on Friday, September 12, 2008 at 2:00pm. Inurnment with military honors will take place at a later date at Westlawn Cemetery in Grand Island, NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church (CPR or General Fund), Larimer County Hospice or the American Cancer Society in care of Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S.
