- Her death certificate says her maiden name was "SANDUSKY" but I think this is a mistake.
- Mahettable Gerrard was born on Feb 23, 1837 in OH. There is a female the right age to be Mahettable, age 4, in the household of John Garard on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co., OH. She is listed at age 14 with her parents on the 1850 census of Somerfield, Madison Co., OH. Her parents moved from OH to Vermilion Co., IL in 1853 when she was about age 16. Mahettable married John Samuel Dye on Oct. 21 1858 in Vermilion Co., IL - her last name is spelled both Gerrard and Garrard on the marriage record. John Samuel & Mahettable had 8 daughters and one son. The family is on the 1860 census of Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. John Samuel served in the Civil War and was wounded by a musket ball in his hand in 1864. When he returned from the war he had trouble farming due to his injury. The family is possibly on the 1870 census of Carroll, Vermilion Co., IL, although there is a lot of conflicting data on the 1870 (see notes). John Samuel Dye deserted his family in August 1877 and resettled in Kansas, where he began a second family. When he died in 1900, his second wife applied for his military pension, but the pension office asked for proof that John Samuel had been divorced from his first wife. Mahettable submitted an affadavit that John Samuel Dye had deserted her and that they had not divorced, and his pension was awarded to Mahettable. Mahettable is on the 1900 census of Danville Twp., Vermilion Co., IL, living with her married daughter Juanita Dye Boggs.
